Today’s modern design is quite the departure from the futuristic décor and outlandish color palettes of that era and instead have been replaced with an inspiring blend of clean lines and cozy accents. Now, modern décor is easy to achieve, comfortable — and timeless.

While many homebuyers believe modern design is cold, hard and even clinical, Kate Pourhassanian believes the opposite is true. Modern design is all about balance and symmetry, she explains. “You balance cool and warm, trendy and traditional, and soft and hard surfaces such as chrome with more raw, natural textures.” Then, incorporate personal items that represent you, your family, your travels and your interests to make a modern home feel welcoming.

Organic living.

Organic spaces flow naturally, utilizing earth-inspired materials and allowing plenty of light into your home. Gorgeous stone accents add a natural feel and texture to walls and backsplashes, and colors such as celadon and jade bring elements of nature inside.

A neutral color palette.

When decorating a modern space, start with a fresh, neutral color palette. Some homes use linen and oatmeal, for example, and then add accent colors, such as sunset rust, sky-blue or charcoal. If your background is on the warmer end of the spectrum, like cream or tan, accent with cooler neutrals, such as gray, black and white and vice versa. Additionally, matte black surfaces and iron or industrial elements can be used to ground a space.

Natural wood.

The mid-century revival has brought back walnuts and rich colors that help balance the minimal palette and sharp edges of modern design. Modern is all about integrating natural woods. In furniture and décor, walnut looks great with zinc accents, and touches of espresso compliment a lighter washed wood.

Slim silhouettes.

Modern style is sleek, but can still be warm and inviting. Look for comfortable couches and furniture with low profiles, clean lines and thin legs to help a room maintain a light and airy look. Contemporary furniture and pendant lights can combine for a modern update.

Lots of layers.

To add some coziness to a modern-inspired room, Pourhassanian recommends incorporating fabrics with interesting textures and movement. Layer fabrics with patterns, fringe, tassels, stitching and raw or woven textures. Additionally, throw pillows and blankets are a great opportunity to add pops of color that balance out an otherwise neutral palette.

Make it your own.

Modern design can work for any lifestyle. The key is to make it your own. A sprinkling of personal, meaningful items make a space feel welcoming and curated, and these unique touches are ultimately what make a house a home. Keep in mind though; less is more. Be intentional with the pieces you choose, but include what you love.
